Directed by Mira Nair (»Monsoon Wedding«), this feel-good movie of uncommon smarts and passion is the colorful true story of Phiona (Nalwanga), a young girl selling corn on the streets of rural Uganda whose world rapidly changes when she is introduced to the game of chess by Robert Katende (Oyelowo; »Selma«), a soccer player turned missionary. Recognizing Phiona's natural aptitude for chess, Katende begins to mentor her, while her mother (Nyong'o; »10 Years a Slave«) is reluctant to provide any encouragement, not wanting to see her daughter disappointed. However, as a result of the support she finally receives from her family and community, she is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to fulfill her extraordinary potential, and escape a life of poverty for herself and her family.
